Easy and painless Dental Bridge treatment — based in Elwood.

You deserve a beautiful smile. Having one or more of your teeth missing can have an impact on your confidence and can keep you from laughing and smiling. This can be especially true if the space is filled with a poorly fitting denture that moves around. Whether you have lost teeth as a result of advanced decay or an injury to the tooth, it’s wise to address the gap that has been left between healthy teeth. This is typically done with the use of one or more types of dental prosthetic solutions.

There can be the inclination to ignore missing teeth if they are not the front teeth that are visible when you smile. Each missing tooth, however, can have an impact on the health of your mouth and on your bite. Also, teeth on either side of the missing tooth will move as will the teeth opposite.

What does an dental bridge fix?

Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, which may result in a bad bite. Dental bridges or dental implants offer the best means of improving smiles by filling in gaps or replacing missing teeth. Missing teeth can cause a change in occlusion (bite), shifting of the teeth, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), speech impediments, an increased risk for periodontal disease and a greater chance of tooth decay.

What is a tooth bridge?

Simply put, a dental bridge will bridge the gap that was created by the missing tooth or teeth. The bridge will be fixed to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. These teeth may need to be capped with a crown to reinforce them or can just have a ‘wing’ of bridge material on the palate or tongue facing side. If there are no healthy teeth, then a dental implant may be the direction in your dentist chooses to go to provide an anchor for your bridge.
A fixed bridge dental prosthetic will ensure good gum health is maintained while also restoring functionality to the side of the mouth.
Bridges can be made using a number of material types. These could include porcelain, Zirconia and porcelain fused to metal. The type of bridge that will work well for you will be determined based upon your unique goals for your dental health.
A bridge is fixed, that is cemented onto your own teeth or attached to implants. It is not removable and doesn’t go in a jar at night!

How does the treatment work?

Bridges span the space where the teeth are missing. Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth or dental implants surrounding the empty space. These teeth, called abutments, serve as anchors for the bridge. A replacement tooth, called a pontic, is attached to the crowns that cover the abutments. As with crowns, you have a choice of materials for bridges.

Porcelain or ceramic bridges can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth. In areas of your mouth that are under less stress, such as your front teeth, a cantilever bridge may be used. Cantilever bridges are used when there are teeth on only one side of the open space. Bridges can reduce your risk of gum disease, help correct some bite issues and improve your speech.

How Long Do Dental Bridges Last? Dental bridges can last five to 15 years and even longer. With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, it is not unusual for the life span of a fixed bridge to be over 10 years.

A dental bridge can be used to replace anywhere from one to four teeth, depending on the patient's needs. However, it is most common that one to two teeth will be replaced. In some rare cases, a bridge can replace more teeth than four; however, there are a few factors that play into it.

The procedure for getting a traditional dental bridge usually takes at least two visits to the dentist, each lasting about an hour to an hour and a half.
In other words, like a traditional bridge you drive on, your false teeth are anchored on either side of the gap and span the distance between them. Dental implants, dentures, and partial dentures are also options when it comes to missing teeth.
The procedure used to put the dental bridge in your mouth is relatively easy and pain-free. Before the procedure, your dentist will use Novocain or other numbing agents to prevent you from feeling any pain during the procedure. Once you are numb, your dentist will start the procedure.
You usually have to wait 5-6 months after an extraction for the gum shape to stabilize before having a final bridge. During this healing phase, you can have a temporary bridge or partial denture if you wish.
Patients who have undergone a dental bridge procedure should be advised as to the best ways to care for the bridge to prolong its lifespan. Fortunately, a dental bridge that has been properly placed usually allows patients to eat and chew normally, without causing significant changes.
While bridges do sometimes loosen over time, they can easily be tightened by your dentist. However, they're built to last a lifetime, so the chances of your bridge falling out are miniscule. A simple way you can reduce the chances of your bridge loosening or falling out is by practicing good oral hygiene.
